Container prefix lookup: whose box is it, and where to track it

The first four letters of a container number name its owner: type them in the check below, or find them in the table of 85 prefixes. Each of the 85 was read on its own page of the BIC register on October 18, 2026; 62 belong to 18 shipping lines and are tracked with that line, 23 to 10 leasing companies, whose boxes are tracked with the line on your bill of lading. We name the owner and the tracker; we show no live status.

Check a container number

Paste the whole number, eleven characters: the check reads the prefix, works the check digit and sends you to the tracker of the owner. It knows the 85 prefixes below and 243 more that the register lists under the same companies.

4 letters + 7 digits, printed on the doors. It is on your bill of lading too.

The answer appears as you type. Nothing is sent anywhere.

We don’t show live status — the carrier’s page is the authoritative source. We validate the number and route you there.

Each prefix links to its section on the owner's page: the register entry, a worked number and what "not found" means for it. 15 of them are also listed by the owning company itself.

Data: BIC Container Prefix Register · ISO 6346 (1995 text, read in IS 6928:2001)

A leasing company's prefix (TGHU, TCLU and CAIU …)

23 of the prefixes here belong to 10 leasing companies. They own the box and rent it to shipping lines, so the owner cannot tell you where it is: the line that carries it can.

This is the answer the trackers that take any number leave out: a leasing code has no tracker of its own. The box sails under the booking of whichever line rented it this time, and that line is the one named on your bill of lading or booking confirmation.

  1. Find the line on your bill of lading, booking confirmation or arrival notice.
  2. Type the container number into that line's tracker, or your bill of lading number if the container number is not found.
  3. No document to hand? Ask whoever booked the freight: the forwarder or the shipper knows the line.

243 more prefixes: the register alone

The BIC register lists these codes under exactly the same company as one of the 85 above, read on October 4, 2026. That is one source, not a reading of each code's page alongside the owner's own documents, and the check says so when it meets one.

A prefix is not a bill of lading

Some lines start their bill of lading numbers with one of their own container prefixes (MEDU, OOLU, HLCU, HDMU, YMLU and ZIMU); others use a code no box carries here (CMDU, COSU, ONEY, EGLV and SMLM). A container number is four letters, six digits and a check digit; a number with these letters that does not pass that check is most likely a bill of lading or a booking: type it into the line's tracker as one.

A prefix that is not here

  • Read the letters again on the door: O and 0, I and 1, U and V are the usual misreadings.
  • The fourth letter of a container prefix is U; J and Z mark equipment that is not a container.
  • A code that is not in this table may still be registered: the BIC register's own search lists every owner code.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find out who owns a container from its prefix?

Look up its first four letters: the check above and the table name the owner for 85 prefixes, each read on the BIC register on October 18, 2026, and for 243 more the register lists under the same companies. The owner's section then says where the box is tracked.

Who owns a TGHU, TCLU or CAIU container?

A leasing company owns it, and you track it with the shipping line on your bill of lading, not with the owner. 23 of the 85 prefixes here belong to leasing companies; they rent the boxes to lines and run no tracker for them.

Is a container prefix the same as a bill of lading prefix?

Not always: MEDU, OOLU, HLCU, HDMU, YMLU and ZIMU start both container numbers and bill of lading numbers, while CMDU, COSU, ONEY, EGLV and SMLM start bills of lading only. A container number has eleven characters, the last a check digit.

Does this page show where my container is?

No: it names the owner and the tracker to use, and only the shipping line's own tracker shows where a box is. We check the number and send you there; we show no live status.
