KMTC Container Tracking

The BIC register shows a single owner code for Korea Marine Transport Co.: KMTU. What trips people up is the brand: the line is KMTC and the code on its boxes is KMTU, so “KMTC” typed into a container search is not a valid number at all.

Cargo booked with KMTC can still arrive in leased paint — a BEAU or TCLU box on a KMTC voyage tracks by its own number on the portal, since events follow the operator, not the owner code.

Enter a bill of lading number exactly as your paperwork prints it: no KMTC document we read names a fixed code at the front of its B/L numbers, so do not add KMTU or KMTC to one. On the cargo-tracking screen the two number types share one input; when a container search comes back empty on a fresh booking, the B/L usually surfaces first because documentation enters the system before the box does.

ekmtc.com is a single-page e-service portal — cargo tracking sits behind the #/cargo-tracking route, loads without login, and returns vessel, voyage and milestone events. There is no deep-link support and, again, no official app: bookmark the portal on your phone’s home screen and it behaves nearly as well.

Not from the container. A standard dry box has no power, no radio and no satellite receiver — it is a steel case with a number painted on it, and it reports nothing about itself. Every position you see against a KMTC shipment was reported by something else: a terminal crane, a gate reader, or the ship.

A live map on a carrier’s tracking page is almost always plotting AIS, the transponder every large vessel broadcasts with its position, course and speed. That is genuinely useful at sea: it is a real position rather than a schedule, and an ETA recalculated from actual movement. It is also the ship’s position, not your box’s, and the two part company the moment the container is discharged.

On land the map goes quiet. Between the gate-out and the delivery there is no vessel to follow, and the road leg appears only as whatever events the terminal and the trucker report. A container sitting on a chassis in a yard shows the last position of a ship it left days ago. Only specialised IoT equipment reports its own location, and wherever that exists it is a paid product sold to the shipper, not something a tracking page gives away.

Fifteen of the eighteen carriers on this site ship a mobile tracking app. KMTC is one of the three that do not — along with Crowley and SM Line — so there is nothing to install and nothing to push you a notification when the box moves. Anything in an app store claiming to be a KMTC tracker is a third party.

The portal makes a reasonable substitute. ekmtc.com is a single-page application: the tracking view sits behind the #/cargo-tracking route, needs no login, and loads fast enough to live on a phone home screen. Add it there and it behaves close enough to an app for the one thing you actually want from one. What you do not get is the alert, so a long voyage means checking rather than being told.

KMTU, not KMTC. The brand is KMTC and the container code is KMTU. A container number that starts with KMTC is not a valid number, which catches people who type what is written on the ship.
