How the floor pattern is found

A container floor is a rectangle and a pallet is a smaller rectangle, so the question is how many of the small ones tile the big one. The calculator does not assume a single orientation: it lays pallets in bands along the container length, tries each band both ways round — long side across the width (straight) and long side along the length (turned) — and keeps whichever combination yields the highest count.

That matters because the two orientations pack differently against a fixed 2,352 mm internal width. An EUR pallet turned across the width takes 1,200 mm, so two fit side by side with 1,152 mm to spare; laid straight it takes 800 mm, so two fit with 752 mm left. Neither wastes the same amount, and the winning pattern is usually a mix of both — a run of straight bands plus a turned tail row at the door end.

The top view under the result shows the winning arrangement to scale, so you can hand it to whoever is doing the stuffing rather than describing it.

Tiers: why the high cube buys a second layer

Once the floor count is set, the total is simply floor count × tiers, and tiers is the internal height divided by your loaded pallet height, rounded down. This is where container choice quietly doubles or halves a shipment, because the standard and high-cube heights straddle common load heights.

Read the 1.2 m column twice: a standard 40 ft gives one tier, a 40 ft high cube gives two. The extra foot of height is worth a second layer exactly in the band where most palletised consumer goods land, which is why high cubes dominate the trade despite costing more to hire.

At 1.5 m loaded height nothing stacks in either box, and the sensible move is to reduce the load height rather than pay for a container that ships air.

Geometry is not payload: the limit that actually bites

The calculator answers a geometry question and stops there. A 40 ft container geometrically accepts 25 EUR pallets in one tier and 50 in two, but its payload is about 26,700 kg — so two tiers only work if each loaded pallet stays under roughly 535 kg. Heavy goods hit the weight ceiling long before the roof.

The practical check is a division, not a diagram: payload ÷ number of pallets = the maximum average weight per pallet. If your pallets weigh more than that, the container is full when the scale says so, however much space is left. Figures per size are in the container weight guide.

Road limits then cut it again in many countries — a container that is legal at sea can be over the axle limit on the drayage leg, which is why 20 ft boxes are often loaded to well under their theoretical payload.

EUR vs GMA: why the counts are not proportional

The EUR pallet is 1,200 × 800 mm; the US GMA pallet is 48 × 40 in, or 1,219 × 1,016 mm. The GMA is 3 % longer and 27 % wider, and that width is what costs you places: two GMA pallets side by side across a 2,352 mm interior need 2,032 mm and leave 320 mm — not enough for a third row in any orientation, while the narrower EUR pallet keeps the turned-row option alive.

The result is that GMA counts fall further than the footprint difference suggests. Our geometric search returns 9 GMA pallets in a 20 ft and 20 in a 40 ft, while the counts published across the industry — and used elsewhere on this site — are 10 and 21, because experienced loaders gain a place with interlocking patterns the band search does not attempt. Treat the calculator as the conservative floor and the published figures as the practical ceiling.

When floor-loading beats palletising

Pallets cost space: the deck itself is 144 mm of height that carries no cargo, and the gaps between pallet edges and the container walls are dead volume. Across a 40 ft high cube, palletising typically surrenders 10–15 % of the usable cube compared with cartons stacked directly on the floor.

Floor-loading wins when cartons are uniform, the destination has labour to unload by hand, and the cargo is light enough that volume — not weight — is the binding constraint. Palletising wins when the receiver runs forklifts, when transit involves multiple handovers, or when the cargo cannot take the compression of a hand-stacked wall.

The honest comparison is cost per delivered unit, not pallets per container: an extra 12 % of cube is worth little if it costs two extra hours of demurrage at the door.

Frequently asked questions

How many pallets fit in a container?

A 20 ft container fits 11 EUR pallets or 10 US GMA pallets in one floor tier; a 40 ft or 40 ft high cube fits 25 EUR or 21 GMA. Stacking a second tier doubles those totals when the loaded pallet height and the payload both allow it.

Does the calculator account for double stacking?

Yes — set the loaded pallet height and tiers are computed as internal container height divided by that height, rounded down, with a minimum of one tier.

How many tiers of 1.2 m pallets fit in a container?

Two in a high cube (2,698 mm internal height) and only one in a standard container (2,393 mm) — the extra foot of high-cube height is exactly what makes the second tier possible at this load height.

Why does my real load differ from the calculated count?

The calculator uses straight band patterns — the way most containers are actually stuffed. Experienced loaders occasionally gain one pallet with interlocking patterns (e.g. 10 US pallets in a 20 ft instead of 9), while overhanging cargo, dunnage and weight limits push counts the other way.

How much can each pallet weigh in a full 40 ft container?

About 1,070 kg per pallet with 25 pallets in one tier, or roughly 535 kg with 50 pallets in two tiers — the 40 ft payload of about 26,700 kg divided by the number of pallets. Exceed that average and the box is full by weight before it is full by volume.

Can I enter a custom pallet size?

Does the calculator check container weight limits?

No — it is purely geometric and never rejects a load for being too heavy. Check the total against the payload figures in the container weight guide and against road axle limits at both ends.

Floor-loading fits 10–15 % more cube because it wastes neither the pallet deck nor the gaps around it, but it costs manual labour at both ends. Palletise when the receiver uses forklifts or the cargo changes hands several times in transit.
