A 40 ft container — standard or high cube, the floor is identical at 12.032 × 2.352 m — takes 25 EUR pallets or 21 US GMA pallets in a single tier. Height is the only difference between the two: 2.393 m internal in the standard, 2.698 m in the HC, which matters for tall loads and double-stacking, never for the floor count.

How many pallets fit in a 40 ft container?

Three rows deserve notes. The 45 ft HC adds 1.524 m of length — two more EUR pallet rows. The domestic 53 ft is wider (2.50 m internal), so GMA pallets load two abreast: 26 straight, up to 30 turned. And the European 40 ft pallet-wide (~2.44 m internal width, non-ISO) fits three EUR bands of 10 — 30 pallets, with the 45 ft pallet-wide reaching a trailer-matching 33. Where 25 and 21 come from

The interior is 12.032 m long × 2.352 m wide. Two EUR pallets can never sit long-side-by-long-side across the width (2 × 1.2 = 2.4 m > 2.352 m — by 48 mm), so the winning pattern is two mixed bands: one band of 10 pallets straight (10 × 1.2 = 12.0 m along the length, 0.8 m of width) beside one band of 15 turned (15 × 0.8 = 12.0 m, 1.2 m of width). Width used: 0.8 + 1.2 = 2.0 m; length used: 12.0 of 12.032 m. Total 25, with just 32 mm of length and 352 mm of width to spare — the tightest standard stuffing pattern in the fleet.

GMA pallets: two columns with the 1.016 m side across the width (2.032 m used), floor(12.032 / 1.219) = 9 per column — 18 — plus three turned at the tail to reach 21. The same width arithmetic explains the pallet-wide row in the table. The ISO width of 2.438 m external was fixed in the 1960s around no pallet standard at all; the European pallet-wide variant stretches internal width to ~2.44 m precisely so that three 0.8 m EUR bands (2.4 m) — or two 1.2 m bands — sit side by side with zero mixing. That single change turns 25 pallets into 30 on the same length of floor, which is why pallet-wide boxes dominate intra-European short-sea loops even though they cannot interlock in deep-sea cell guides.

Double-stacking: weight first, height second

Check weight before geometry, because it binds first. The 40 ft payload is 26,740 kg (28,600 kg for the HC). Twenty-five loaded EUR pallets at 1,000 kg each — 25 t — fit the rating; at 1,100 kg (27.5 t) you are already over the standard 40 ft’s payload with a single tier on the floor. For a full double stack of 50 pallets, the budget is ~530 kg per loaded pallet — and road limits (roughly 19–21 t of cargo in most jurisdictions) usually cut that further.

Then height: two tiers need each loaded pallet — goods plus 144 mm of pallet — under ~1.19 m in a standard 40 ft (2.393 m internal) or ~1.34 m in a high cube (2.698 m). Finally crush strength: the bottom tier’s packaging carries the entire top tier through weeks of ocean vibration, so corrugated boxes need a stacking-strength rating, not just intact edges. ISPM 15: heat treatment for wood pallets

Solid-wood pallets in international transit must carry the ISPM 15 mark: the IPPC wheat-ear logo, a country code, a producer number and HT (heat treated — 56 °C core for 30 minutes) or MB (methyl bromide). Unmarked wood can have the entire container held, fumigated, re-palletised or re-exported at the shipper’s cost — Australia, New Zealand and the US enforce aggressively.

EPAL-certified EUR pallets are heat-treated as part of certification. One-way export pallets are the risk: verify the stamp on every block before stuffing. Plastic, presswood and cardboard pallets are exempt from ISPM 15 entirely, which is why high-volume exporters to strict markets often switch.

Loading mistakes that lose pallet spots

Chasing gaps. The 25-EUR pattern leaves 352 mm along one wall; the temptation is to turn pallets mid-row to “use” it. A mixed ad-hoc pattern almost always strands more floor than the two clean bands do — trust the band layout and fill the strip with dunnage bags.

Overhang. Cargo lipping over the pallet edge by even 20 mm per side turns a 1200 mm footprint into 1240 mm — and the 48 mm width margin on the EUR pattern is gone, dropping the count from 25 to 20 or forcing a re-stack at the warehouse. Measure loaded pallets, not empty ones. No securing. A single tier with 0.35 m of free width will shift in a seaway: airbags in the void, a strap or lash ring at the door end, and never a loose final row against the doors — it is the first thing a surveyor photographs after a door-opening incident.

Ignoring longitudinal balance. Twelve metres of floor make it easy to load all the heavy pallets at the closed end. Keep the centre of gravity within ~60 cm of the container’s midpoint and no more than ~60% of cargo weight in either half — an end-heavy 40 ft can exceed a tractor or bogie axle limit at destination while the total weight is perfectly legal, and rebalancing a sealed container costs a warehouse appointment. In a reefer, add one more rule: never block the T-bar floor channels or stack above the red load line — air must return under and over the cargo, and pallets against the end wall choke the circuit.

Cost per pallet: FCL vs LCL

A 40 ft at a typical 25–30% premium over the 20 ft rate carries 25 EUR spots against 11 — around 45% cheaper per pallet, which is why volume freight defaults to forties. Divide your all-in FCL quote by 25 (or 21 GMA) and you have your benchmark cost per pallet spot to compare against LCL per-m³ pricing.

The crossover is consistent: below ~12–15 m³ (about 6–8 EUR pallets at 1.9 m³ each), LCL usually wins despite its higher per-m³ rate and extra handling. From ~15 m³ up, a dedicated box wins on price and on risk — your pallets are not co-loaded, restuffed or delayed by someone else’s customs hold.
