Container security is asymmetric: the box is 1.6–2 mm of Corten steel that laughs at crowbars, while the factory door hardware — four lock rods, cam keepers and two handle hasps — was designed to keep doors shut at sea, not to resist a $20 bolt cutter on a $15 padlock. Every real-world container theft targets the same three points: the padlock shackle, the hasp rivets, and the door hinge pins. Every effective lock system defends exactly those points.

The lockbox: 350 × 180 mm of grinder protection
A lockbox is a steel shroud — typically ~350 × 180 × 100 mm, folded from 3–6 mm plate — welded to the right-hand door leaf, with a matching staple plate on the left leaf that its slot drops over. The padlock hangs inside the box, reachable only through a hand-slot from below. The geometry is the security: bolt cutters cannot reach the shackle at a working angle, an angle grinder must cut the 3–6 mm shroud plate first (minutes of sparks and noise, versus seconds on an exposed shackle), and hammer attacks hit plate, not lock.
Numbers: $40–100 for the lockbox, $50–150 welded on, and many used containers already carry one — worth checking when buying. Bolt-on retrofit versions exist for owners without a welder; through-bolted with the nuts inside, they give up little. Selection logic: for a static storage box, lockbox + 60–70 mm hardened padlock (or a puck lock, which removes the shackle problem entirely) is the standard answer at under $200 total. A crossbar adds a second, different attack problem for high-risk sites. Chains are a stopgap. GPS smart locks earn their subscription on fleets and remote sites, where the alert matters more than the steel — pair one with container tracking practice, not instead of a mechanical lock. Bolt seals and cable seals: ISO 17712
A seal is not a lock — it is evidence. A bolt seal (a steel pin snapped into a one-way barrel through the door hasp, cut off with bolt cutters at destination) or a cable seal (a wire rope cinched through both lock rods) proves one thing: the doors have not been opened since sealing. Each carries a unique serial number recorded on the bill of lading; a broken or mismatched seal at destination triggers a cargo claim and an insurance trail.
ISO 17712 grades seals in three classes by tested strength: “I” (indicative) — plastic ties that only show tampering; “S” (security); and “H” (high security) — bolt and cable seals passing defined tensile, shear, bending and impact tests plus tamper-evidence audits. Ocean carriers and the US CTPAT program require class H seals on laden import containers; a compliant seal is stamped with the class letter, maker’s mark and serial. Cost is trivial against the cargo: $1–4 per H-class bolt seal in boxes of 100. Practice: photograph the applied seal with its number, verify the number (not just presence) at destination, and treat any discrepancy as a claim event.

Where locks fail
Post-incident patterns repeat. The exposed shackle: any padlock hung bare on the handle hasps dies to 24-inch bolt cutters in seconds — without a lockbox, lock quality barely matters. The hasp, not the lock: factory handle hasps are riveted; thieves drill or shear the rivets and lift the whole assembly, lock intact — welded hasps or a lockbox close this. The hinges: grind two pins, and the door opens backwards on the locked side. The second door: the left leaf’s lock rods hold it shut; a crossbar or interior slide-bolt on the passive leaf stops pry attacks that peel it.
