Container Ventilation & Condensation
A sealed steel box is a condensation machine. The air inside always carries some moisture — from cargo, packaging, timber floors or simply the day it was closed — and steel walls track the outside temperature almost instantly. Cool the steel below the air’s dew point and water appears on the ceiling as reliably as on a cold beer glass.
The escalation path runs from free (vent placement) through cheap (desiccants) to permanent (insulation). Most storage problems are solved at the first two steps.
Why do containers rain inside?
Air at 25 °C and 70% relative humidity holds about 16 g of water per cubic metre and has a dew point near 19 °C. A clear night drops the roof steel well below that, and every cubic metre of interior air surrenders its excess water onto the coldest surface — the underside of the roof. A 33 m³ container in those conditions can condense over 100 ml in one night, which is why cargo arrives water-marked from a box that never leaked. The trigger is the day–night temperature swing, not rainfall: the worst container rain happens in dry climates with cold nights and in humid coastal ones alike.
How many vents does a container need?
Standard dry containers ship with two to four small pressure vents — enough to equalise air pressure, nowhere near enough for moisture. Effective passive ventilation needs a flow path: fit louvred vents low on one end wall and high on the opposite corner, so warm moist air exits at the top while cooler air enters at the bottom and sweeps the length of the box. Two vents on the same wall, or both at the same height, move almost no air. Four vents (two low, two high, diagonally opposed) is the standard retrofit for a 20 ft storage unit; all should be baffled or hooded against driven rain.
Turbine vents and powered options
For conversions — workshops, offices, anything humans occupy — passive cross-flow is not enough. A whirlybird (turbine vent) on the roof extracts air continuously with no power, driven by wind and thermal lift; paired with low intake vents it changes the air many times per hour. Solar-powered extractor fans do the same with more authority and work on still days. Cut-ins through the roof must be flashed and sealed properly — a leaking vent causes exactly the problem it was meant to solve.
Desiccants: dosing that actually works
Desiccants absorb moisture rather than remove its source, which makes them the right tool for sealed short-term storage and shipping. The dose that works in practice: 1–2 kg of desiccant per 10 m³ of container volume per month in humid climates — so a 33 m³ 20 ft box needs 3–6 kg monthly, not the single 500 g pouch commonly thrown in. Calcium-chloride pole-mounted absorbers outperform silica gel per kilogram and show their work as collected brine. Replace on schedule; a saturated desiccant is dead weight.
Ventilated containers and the permanent fix
Cargo that breathes — coffee, cocoa, grain — ships in purpose-built ventilated containers with full-length vent galleries, one of the special types covered in types of shipping containers. For everything else, the permanent cure is stopping warm air from reaching cold steel at all: insulation with a vapour barrier, which turns the problem off at the source.
