# Yang Ming Container Tracking

Yang Ming’s cargo tracking sits inside the e-service area of yangming.com, behind one of the strictest bot walls among major carriers: automated requests get an “Access Denied” page, which is why aggregator sites and scripted lookups often fail while the same number works instantly in a normal browser tab. The search accepts container numbers and [bills of lading](https://contsize.com/glossary/bill-of-lading/); documents display the **YMLU** code even where regional variants exist internally. Fleet prefixes are YMLU and YMMU. Validate the digit below, then open the e-service page yourself — a human visit is the reliable path.

## Track a Yang Ming container by number

Taiwan’s second deep-sea line guards its tracker aggressively, and that shapes the whole experience: third-party tools that happily proxy [Maersk](https://contsize.com/maersk-container-tracking/) or [CMA CGM](https://contsize.com/cma-cgm-container-tracking/) data frequently show blanks for Yang Ming. The data is there — you just have to be a person in a browser to see it.

The e-service umbrella covers more than location pings. Yang Ming’s mobile suite folds in [VGM](https://contsize.com/glossary/vgm/) submission and demurrage-and-detention inquiry, so the same login that tracks the box can also tell you what the terminal is about to charge for it.

Yang Ming containers carry the prefixes YMLU and YMMU; each is worked through, with its check digit and where the code came from, on the prefix page of [Yang Ming](https://contsize.com/yang-ming-container-prefixes/).

## Yang Ming prefixes: YMLU and YMMU

Two owner codes cover the fleet, and **YMLU** dominates by a wide margin; **YMMU** appears on a smaller share of equipment. Both belong to Yang Ming Marine Transport in the BIC register and behave the same in every tracking system, so there is no operational meaning to draw from which one your box carries.

## Yang Ming B/L numbers: YMLU as the canonical code

Yang Ming paperwork presents **YMLU** as the document prefix. Regional filing codes exist deeper in the plumbing, but the number printed on your bill of lading — and the one the e-service search expects — is the YMLU form, followed by the numeric document reference.

## How to track a YML (Yang Ming Line) container

If you see “Access Denied”, you have met the bot wall, not a broken page — it fires on automated traffic, VPN exit nodes and some privacy-hardened browsers. Open the cargo-tracking page directly in an ordinary browser session and the form works, taking container or B/L numbers. The mobile e-service suite mirrors tracking and adds VGM filing plus DEM/DET inquiry, useful once the box lands and the free days start counting.

## Can you see where the ship is?

Not from the container. A standard dry box has no power, no radio and no satellite receiver — it is a steel case with a number painted on it, and it reports nothing about itself. Every position you see against a Yang Ming shipment was reported by something else: a terminal crane, a gate reader, or the ship.

A live map on a carrier’s tracking page is almost always plotting [AIS](https://contsize.com/glossary/ais/), the transponder every large vessel broadcasts with its position, course and speed. That is genuinely useful at sea: it is a real position rather than a schedule, and an ETA recalculated from actual movement. It is also the ship’s position, not your box’s, and the two part company the moment the container is discharged.

On land the map goes quiet. Between the [gate-out](https://contsize.com/glossary/gate-out/) and the delivery there is no vessel to follow, and the road leg appears only as whatever events the terminal and the trucker report. A container sitting on a chassis in a yard shows the last position of a ship it left days ago. Only specialised IoT equipment reports its own location, and wherever that exists it is a paid product sold to the shipper, not something a tracking page gives away.

## Yang Ming transit times, as published

How long a container spends at sea on Yang Ming services, port to port. Each figure below is stated by two documents for the same service and the same pair of ports — the line’s own schedule and one more — and both are linked beside it. Where we could not find two, the pair is not listed.

These are schedule figures between two ports, not delivery times: add the days before the vessel sails and after it discharges, and expect the real voyage to drift by a few days either way. A line can change a rotation at any time, so check the date on each source.

The Asia–Europe figures are for the route around the Cape of Good Hope. On 18 October 2026 the lines’ own pages still sent these services that way; only ONE named services back through the Suez Canal (FE1, IOX). A return to Suez shortens the voyage by roughly ten days, so a figure here is out of date for any service that moves.

## Why no aggregator can show you Yang Ming data

Yang Ming runs one of the strictest bot walls among major carriers: automated requests meet an “Access Denied” page rather than a result. That is a deliberate defence, and it has a consequence worth knowing before you go looking for a shortcut. The tracking aggregators that rank for "Yang Ming tracking" either hold a commercial data feed or they are showing you nothing at all — they cannot scrape this one.

The same wall catches ordinary people more often than it should. A VPN exit node, a privacy-hardened browser or an unusual extension can all look automated enough to trip it. If you see Access Denied, that is not a broken page and not a bad number: open the cargo-tracking page in a plain browser session and the form works normally.

## When the Yang Ming tracker returns nothing

**Rule out Access Denied first.** It is the most common Yang Ming failure and it is not an empty result — read what the page actually says before assuming the number is wrong.

**Two prefixes, one of them rare.** YMLU covers most of the fleet and YMMU a small share. Both resolve to Yang Ming and both search identically, so the code on the door carries no operational meaning — but a misread first letter does, and the checker here catches it.

**Documents are YMLU too.** The bill of lading prefix is YMLU, the same letters as the main container code, which makes it easy to paste a document number into a container field. They are different lengths; the form expects the right one.

**Too new, or archived.** Events begin at [gate-in](https://contsize.com/glossary/gate-in/) or loading, and finished shipments drop out of the live system after some weeks.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is YML the same carrier as Yang Ming?**

Yes — YML is the usual abbreviation for Yang Ming Marine Transport, the Keelung line founded in 1972, and both its owner codes belong to that company. Tracking a YML box means using the e-service form described above.

**Why does Yang Ming tracking show “Access Denied”?**

The e-service platform runs strict bot protection that blocks scripted requests and some VPN or privacy-browser traffic. Open yangming.com in a regular browser window and search there — the block targets robots, not your number.

**Why do third-party trackers show nothing for my Yang Ming box?**

Aggregators scrape carrier sites, and Yang Ming’s bot wall stops them more often than most. An empty third-party result means the scraper was denied, not that the shipment lacks events — check the official e-service page.

**Is YMMU a different company from YMLU?**

No — both prefixes are registered to Yang Ming Marine Transport. YMLU is simply far more common and doubles as the code shown on bills of lading.

**Can I check demurrage and detention through Yang Ming e-service?**

Yes — the mobile e-service suite includes a DEM/DET inquiry alongside cargo tracking and VGM submission, so you can watch free time run down without emailing the local office.

**Does Yang Ming take booking numbers in the tracker?**

The public cargo-tracking search verified for this page accepts container and B/L numbers. For booking-level questions, the e-service portal with a login is the route.
