# Wan Hai Container Tracking

Wan Hai is the intra-Asia specialist among the world’s top fifteen lines, and its tracking rhythm shows it: dense short loops between Asian ports produce event chains measured in days, with sailings so frequent that a missed vessel usually means the next one within the week. Search wanhai.com with a container number (WHLU or WHSU) or a [bill of lading](https://contsize.com/glossary/bill-of-lading/) number as printed — but do it in a regular browser, because the site’s aggressive bot protection turns away automated tools. Established in Taipei in February 1965 as a lumber shipper, Wan Hai ranks eleventh on Alphaliner’s list as read on 18 October 2026, at about 633,000 TEU.

## Track a Wan Hai Lines container by number

While the megacarriers chase transpacific headlines, Wan Hai built its business on frequency: the same Asian port pairs served over and over, feeding regional supply chains that cannot wait three weeks for a box. Tracking one of its shipments means reading a compressed timeline where load and discharge sit days apart.

Check your number here; two prefixes cover the owned boxes, so validation is quick.

Wan Hai containers carry the prefixes WHLU and WHSU; each is worked through, with its check digit and where the code came from, on the prefix page of [Wan Hai](https://contsize.com/wan-hai-container-prefixes/).

## Wan Hai prefixes: WHLU and WHSU

The BIC register assigns **WHLU** and **WHSU** to Wan Hai Lines, and nothing else. A passing check digit on either prefix settles ownership immediately — and on short-sea trades Wan Hai supplements its own boxes with leased ones, which track at wanhai.com by their own numbers whenever Wan Hai carries the booking.

## Wan Hai B/L numbers: enter them as printed

No Wan Hai document we read names a fixed code at the front of its bill of lading numbers, so copy the number exactly as your bill shows it rather than adding or dropping letters. The tracker takes a container number or a B/L number, but each must be entered as printed and under its own search: a number entered under the wrong one fails silently.

## Using the wanhai.com tracker

The cargo-track page answers ordinary browser visits without an account, while scripted requests hit a hard bot shield — one reason aggregators show gaps for Wan Hai shipments that the official site displays fine. There is no pre-fill link; paste the validated number. Uniquely among the lines we cover, Wan Hai publishes two mobile apps — the full-service Wan Hai APP and the lighter Wan Touch — and both include tracking.

## Can you see where the ship is?

Not from the container. A standard dry box has no power, no radio and no satellite receiver — it is a steel case with a number painted on it, and it reports nothing about itself. Every position you see against a Wan Hai Lines shipment was reported by something else: a terminal crane, a gate reader, or the ship.

A live map on a carrier’s tracking page is almost always plotting [AIS](https://contsize.com/glossary/ais/), the transponder every large vessel broadcasts with its position, course and speed. That is genuinely useful at sea: it is a real position rather than a schedule, and an ETA recalculated from actual movement. It is also the ship’s position, not your box’s, and the two part company the moment the container is discharged.

On land the map goes quiet. Between the [gate-out](https://contsize.com/glossary/gate-out/) and the delivery there is no vessel to follow, and the road leg appears only as whatever events the terminal and the trucker report. A container sitting on a chassis in a yard shows the last position of a ship it left days ago. Only specialised IoT equipment reports its own location, and wherever that exists it is a paid product sold to the shipper, not something a tracking page gives away.

## Intra-Asia voyages are short, and the tracking window with them

Wan Hai built its business on short-sea and intra-Asia trades rather than the long east–west strings, and that changes what the tracking feed looks like. A transpacific crossing leaves three or four weeks of vessel events to watch; a Taiwan-to-Vietnam run can be over in a few days, with the whole timeline arriving almost at once.

Two practical consequences. The gap between booking and the first event is proportionally larger — a day of nothing is a bigger share of a five-day voyage than of a thirty-day one, so an empty result on a fresh booking is normal. And the shipment reaches the archive sooner, because the clock starts at delivery and the delivery comes quickly.

## When the Wan Hai tracker returns nothing

**Container or B/L search?** A container number is WHLU or WHSU, six digits and a check digit; anything else on your paperwork is a document number. A number entered under the wrong search fails silently rather than telling you what went wrong.

**You may have been blocked.** The page answers an ordinary browser without an account, but scripted traffic meets a hard shield. That is also why aggregators show gaps for Wan Hai shipments the official site displays fine.

**Check the digit.** Two prefixes that differ by one letter make a misread easy, and the checker here catches it before the search.

**Too new, or archived.** The first event appears at [gate-in](https://contsize.com/glossary/gate-in/) or loading, and on these short trades the shipment leaves the live system sooner than you would expect.

Wan Hai was established in February 1965 to haul lumber between Taiwan and Japan, later moved to containers, and never joined a global alliance — cooperation runs through route-level deals instead, such as PS6 with [ONE](https://contsize.com/one-container-tracking/) and the CIM service with [Yang Ming](https://contsize.com/yang-ming-container-tracking/) and [Evergreen](https://contsize.com/evergreen-container-tracking/).

## Frequently asked questions

**Why is Wan Hai tracking blocked for automated tools?**

wanhai.com runs aggressive bot protection that rejects scripted lookups, so aggregator sites often come back empty. A normal browser visit to the official cargo-track page succeeds with the same number.

**What is the difference between the Wan Hai APP and Wan Touch?**

Wan Hai maintains two mobile apps: the Wan Hai APP as the full e-service client and Wan Touch as a lighter companion. Both track shipments; pick by how much beyond tracking you need.

**How do I tell a Wan Hai container number from a B/L number?**

A container number is WHLU or WHSU, six digits and a check digit, eleven characters in all. Anything else on your paperwork is a document number: enter it exactly as printed, because the tracker rejects a number entered under the wrong form.

**Is Wan Hai part of an alliance?**

No — Wan Hai stays independent and cooperates route by route (the PS6 service with ONE and the CIM loop with Yang Ming and Evergreen are examples), so its tracker remains the single source for its bookings.

**Does Wan Hai sail beyond Asia?**

Intra-Asia is the core, but the network extends to selected Middle East and long-haul services. Wherever the loop runs, expect the short, dense event pattern of a frequency-first carrier.

**How big is Wan Hai compared with the majors?**

About 633,000 TEU, eleventh on Alphaliner’s list as read on 18 October 2026 — small next to MSC, yet the dominant dedicated player on many Asian port pairs.
